Hibiscus Sabdariffa

There are many types of hibiscus flowers. The Hibiscus sabdariffa, or rosella flower, has been adopted as a native in the tropics of Australia. Hibiscus sabdariffa has been there for thousands of years and is originally thought to have been brought to the northern shores by Indonesian fishermen and travellers. This edible hibiscus grows on the fringes of rainforests and is often found behind sand dunes in the tropical north of Australia. There are several native hibiscus closely related to the rosella.

The rosella bush produces red edible calyxes that are high in vitamin C. They have a pleasant tart, yet sweet, flavour that goes well in salads, jellies, red sauces, jams, cordials, syrups, fruit teas and wine. Rosellas are high in antioxidants, have anti inflammatory properties and are able to lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Similarly, they can aid in improving coughs and colds.
